Man on the Moon was the debut album of the hip hop artist, Kid Cudi, back in 2009. The album had three major singles and was nominated for three grammys. Kid Cudi even toured with artists like Lady Gaga when promoting this album. According to Kid Cudi, also known as Scott Mescudi, every single song has a message.
The album was set to be very sequential, and Mescudi believed that anyone could listen, whether they were trying to sleep, getting high, or just relaxing. Listen to "The Anthem" I get the vibe that Kid Cudi was feeling out of place with his writing. At first glace, his songs and lyrics fit right into other hip hop songs around 2009. When taking a deeper analysis of the lyrics, the listener can hear the Cudi feels almost alienated and does not feel that his lyrics fit with everyone else's. For that reason he feels as if he is "On the Moon."
Throughout the record, Kid Cudi speaks to topics like acceptance and not caring what others think. I think that is a very positive message for people listening to the record. Everyone should follow their dreams, whether or not they fit with the "grain" of others. He also speaks about treating others with respect, which is evident his in lines about women, not degrading them. On the negative side, there is a lot of drug use present in Kid Cudi's lyrics. He says that he, and others, escape life through drug use. This is more of a personal anecdote for Cudi mainly because he suffered from repeated drug use, as well as the drug use of his peers.
Overall, this record was received very well. Kid Cudi became a platinum selling artist, and was nominated for multiple grammy's. He also had great mentors for the album such as Kanye West. Being that this record receiving many accolades I would believe that mostly all people listened to his music, probably primarily ages 35 and below.
